Blake Standard

Pierre Colorado of Blake Standard: The Gold Standard of Easy Luxury

“People’s lifestyles inspire me.  I am not looking to create an haute couture masterpiece.  I am looking to create pieces that my customer needs in her daily routine that is chic and easy, and work for many different occasions,” says Pierre Colorado, the designer behind the Blake Standard label.

His women's sportswear line consists of perfectly cut and detailed supima cotton basics that are utterly simple and chic.

Pierre earned a degree in fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York before working for several top brands, most recently at Abercrombie and Fitch, where he was a senior designer.

However, Pierre wanted to use his experience to create his own label. “After working for many years in the industry, I launched the line after feeling that I had an approach that I really believed in.”

Essentially, he realized the need for chic, easy, and luxurious sportswear in the women’s market.

The Blake Standard line draws fans across the fashion spectrum with its simple yet stylish look. When asked about his core customers, Pierre says, “I don’t design for a demographic, but more to a psychographic…this means a way of thinking about and approaching fashion, regardless of age or financial disposition.” This means that everyone from girly girls to black-clad hipsters can appreciate his designs.

For spring and summer 2007, Blake Standard will be featuring lots of bold, rich colors such as “red-toned pinks and a really gorgeous electric blue called azure,” but the whole line still revolves around white, the most popular color, especially in dresses and tunics.

They’re also doing a very pale, silvery gray that “when worn with white creates a shadowy look.” Other popular colors include gray, navy, and of course black, every fashionista’s mainstay. Combining pieces in these colors is the perfect way to work some of spring’s most stylish shades into your wardrobe without appearing overly trendy.

The spring collection also has plenty of tunics and little dresses, as well as hoodies (cut extra long with a deep scoop neck) and track jackets made of ultra-soft cotton terry.  “We’re doing a beautiful, simple summer bubble dress and using lots of pleating details to make things more ‘fashion’.”  He’s also working on empire waist dresses, feather-weight sweaters, and tunics with full, dramatic sleeves for next fall.

In addition, Pierre is planning to add menswear to the label, in the form of shorts and polo shirts, starting in spring 2008.

If you would like to check out the line for yourself, it’s available at Bloomingdale’s (900 North Michigan). Blake Standard will be hosting a fun evening of informal modeling and refreshments at the store on April 21st.

His fashions are also available locally at Roslyn in Bucktown,  Anthropologie, and Mark Shale, among others.
